  • It took him seven years to complete his first book of poetry, Harmonium which was published in 1923.
  • Although Harmonium is now considered as a seminal work in modern poetry, the volume of its sale was insignificant.

  • After encountering opposition against his marriage, Stevens ceased speaking to his father for the rest of his life.
  • The marriage was unhappy as Elsie gradually created a gulf between herself and Stevens after the birth of Holly, their only daughter. The couple, however, never divorced.
  • Holly edited her father's letters which was published as Letters of Wallace Stevens in 1966.
  • His 1954 book, Collected Poems won both a National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize.
  • Despite being a contemporary of modernist poets, such as T.S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, and William Carlos Williams, Wallace never joined the intellectual circle.
  • Stevens enrolled in Harvard as an undergraduate student in 1897 but left the university in 1900 without accomplishing a degree.
  • He graduated in law in 1903 from New York Law School and was admitted to the U.S. Bar in 1904.
  • He practiced law in different law firms until 1916.
  • In 1916, Stevens took a position at Hartford Accident and Indemnity Company.  In 1932 he was appointed Vice President of the company and served there until his demise.

Moving with the Earth Into Winter with a Few Poems

frost flowers on my car window

A Winter Solstice actually occurs twice a year, once in December in the Northern Hemisphere (also called December solstice and Midwinter) and once in June in the Southern Hemisphere (also called June solstice). In the Northern Hemisphere, it is usually December 21 or 22 and in the Southern Hemisphere, it's usually June 20 or 21.

In 2010, the solstice and Full Moon coincided and in 2009 I wrote a post about another coincidence of a Full Moon on December 31 to end the year that was also the second full moon of the month, and so was considered a "Blue Moon.”

Solstices have long been celebrated and written about. It is the shortest day of the year and the longest night, and it marks the astronomical first day of winter.

solstice sunrise at Stonehenge

Solstices are one of the oldest known holidays in human history. Anthropologists believe that solstice celebrations go back at least 30,000 years.

You probably know that many of the most ancient stone structures made by human beings were designed to pinpoint the precise date of the solstice. The most famous example is the stone circles of Stonehenge which were placed to receive the first rays of the midwinter sun.

We often see winter - in everyday life and in poetry - as a depressing time of year. Death symbolism abounds. At least in northern climes, you tend to be confined indoors. Outside looks bare and dead. But solstice celebrations focus more on hope with the reversal of shortening days. It is more seen as a time to celebrate the rebirth of the year.

The word solstice derives from Latin sol (sun) and sistere (to stand still) since to the ancients the sun did seem to stand still now. In Greek mythology, the gods and goddesses had their meetings on the winter and summer solstices.

In many cultural histories, this is the time when virgin mothers give birth to sacred sons: Rhiannon to Pryderi, Isis to Horus, Demeter to Persephone and Mary to Jesus.

You can take a scientific look at the solstice. We know that as the Earth travels around the Sun in its orbit, the north-south position of the Sun changes over the course of the year. That is because of the changing orientation of the Earth's tilted rotation axes with respect to the Sun.  When we arrive at the points of maximum tilt (marked at the equator), we get the summer and winter solstice.

Two poems I found in my Full Moon and solstice search became models for a past writing prompt that uses the solstice (and perhaps the Full Moon) without falling into the cliches of winter and moon symbolism.

The first is "December Moon" from May Sarton's collection Coming into Eighty.

The second model is Mary Oliver's poem "Herons in Winter in the Frozen Marsh" (from Owls and Other Fantasies: Poems and Essays)

William Carlos Williams' "Approach of Winter" says:

The half-stripped trees
struck by a wind together,
bending all,
the leaves flutter drily
and refuse to let go
or driven like hail
stream bitterly out to one side
and fall
where the salvias, hard carmine,—
like no leaf that ever was—
edge the bare garden.

Some people are sad or suffer from SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) in winter, so as an antidote have your own solstice celebrations and try to focus on the hope of this day starting the reversal of shortening days. It is as a time to celebrate the rebirth of the year.

How about this stanza from "Toward the Winter Solstice" by Timothy Steele.

Some wonder if the star of Bethlehem
Occurred when Jupiter and Saturn crossed;
It’s comforting to look up from this roof
And feel that, while all changes, nothing’s lost,
To recollect that in antiquity
The winter solstice fell in Capricorn
And that, in the Orion Nebula,
From swirling gas, new stars are being born.

Here are a few more to read that have a range of reactions to the Winter Solstice.

"Again a Solstice" by Jennifer Chang
"Fairbanks Under the Solstice" by John Haines
You can also listen to Robert Graves' "To Juan at the Winter Solstice"

Have a great solstice, winter, and new year!

How to Select a Research Topic

HOW TO SELECT A RESEARCH TOPIC
By Adnan Hussain
}  WHAT IS RESEARCH TOPIC
·         A concept, subject or issue that can be studied or investigated through research
·         It may be unanswered or unsolved questions, a query or statement of inquiry
·         A successful Research Project starts with a good topic but how can one decide what to pick?
WHAT CONSTITUTES A RESEARCH TOPIC
  • It may sound strange, but the first step when doing research isn’t choosing a direct topic. You aren’t going to say, “Okay, my topic is … Birds….. Or Human Language…. Let’s start searching”
  • Rather, from an initial, and perhaps very general, research topic area, you’re going to formulate a research question, or set of questions, that you can then investigate further.
  • You have to see what information is available to you, and then start honing in on a manageable topic from there.
  • Thus, the first step is not to choose a direct topic, and then do research. The first step is to research, more specifically, what your topic even is.
IMPORTANT STEPS
·         Pick a (manageable) idea/topic of interest
·         Try to pick a broad idea / topic that you find interesting. This will ensure the research process as engaging and fun as possible.
  • Be flexible
  • Understand that choosing a research topic is a cyclical process. No topic should be set in tone. Be prepared to change/reshape your topic as you search for information, read about your topic, and learn more
}  SEARCH FOR INFORMATION ON TOPIC
  • After searching information from resources, such as scholarly articles and books, in the library catalogue and relevant databases. If one find a lot of work already done. Then Topic should be narrowed down.
Example
  • You search a database about your topic and result comes as….

  • If you find too much information, your topic might be too broad. To make your topic more specific and narrow, try to zero in on a single aspect of your topic.
  • Narrow your topic and search again
Example
  • If you cannot find enough information resources, your topic might be too specific. To broaden your topic, consider removing some of your criteria from your research topic.
Example
  • Instead of investigating the use of “Instagram by university students at funerals”, you might broaden your topic to the “Use of Instagram at funerals”
  • Narrow it down to an effective research topic once you have learn a little more
  • There are many things that can help you to select a topic such as newspapers, magzine, Library database, conversation with friend or discussion with your supervisor/instructor.
FIVE W…
  • After reviewing and choosing a broad topic, we have to analyze it under five “W’s” questions
  • Who: which group have interest in the topic.
  • What: What are the most important issues at stake? What are the different factors involved?
  • Where is the topic relevant?
  • When did the situation, event or problem started?
  • Why: Why it happened. Why it is significant?
  • Once you answer the who, what, where, when and  why, now you have a good idea of an effective, narrowed version of your  topic.
ATTRIBUTES OF A GOOD RESEARCH TOPIC
  • Feasible
  • Are you interested in topic
  • Do you have necessary research skills?
  • Can you complete your research within available time?
  • Will research be current when you finish the research
ATTRIBUTES OF A GOOD RESEARCH TOPIC
  • Availability of necessary tools and equipment
  • Do you have sufficient financial and other resources ?
  • Will you be able to get access to relevant data?
  • Ensure that you have access to the information needed to answer the question or test the hypothesis.
  • Determine the availability of and access to literature and information, needed to complete research, technical and computing skills, etc. required
  •  Ensure that you can make a good thesis/dissertation statement/question/a research hypothesis about the problem as you need to be able to convince others of the novelty of the topic.
LIMITS
  • The title should not be too long (normally not more than 10 words) but should provide as much information about the study as possible.
  • The title should preferably not be in a question form; it must define the research clearly, and must be clear and precise.
  • The title should not contain technical terms, or jargon. The use of acronyms should be limited.

I have been wrong about 2020’s presidential election and I
should say so. I had expected that by the end of Super Tuesday (March 3rd
this time around), we would see a Democratic party race reduced to no more than
four serious contenders: Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren and one or two
centrists aiming for the neoliberal vote, the old Clinton coalition that has
not won a presidential

Hamara ye tum ko salam aakhri hai
Suno aaj tum se kalaam aakhri hai

Agar ho sake tu bhula dena
Yehi ik chota sa kaam aakhri hai

Abhi aarzoun k sehra pyase hain
Magar aansoun ka jaam aakhri hai

Teri bewafai ka ye shikwa aakhri hai
Yehi tu wafaon ka inaam aakhri hai

Zara dair thehro qaza k farishto
Labon pe humara pyaam aakhri hai

Koi na mil sake ga tujhe mere jaisa
Teri adaon ka ye ghulam aakhri hai

Romantic Poetry in Urdu

Nazar aayi jo mujhe tum us din
Uasi din ruk gayi jaise ye zindagi

Bholi si wo surat, masoom si murat
Kya kahu koi pari khoobsurat…..

Aaj bhi usi jagah kharra hu main
ye soch ke ki

Kal ka ittefaq shayad aaj bhi hoga
aaj bhi aaogi tum

Nazron ka nazron se Milna Aaj Bhi Hoga

Na jaane yuhi kitne din guzzar gaye,
par tum na aayi

Darta hu KHUDA ki bandagi se,
tumhare bina jeene ki soch k
darta hu is zindagi se

Par aaj bhi hai aas
aaj bhi hai intezaar
Ab zindagi ka yahi aalam hai,
Esi umeed par ki tum kal zaroor aaogi

Meri Zindagi ruk si Gayi hai.

Youm-E-Muhabbat Phir Se Aa Phuncha Hai

Muhabbat k Izhaar Ki Moham Si Khuwaish

Dilon Main Kismasati Hai
Lahoo Garmae Jaati Hai

Muhabbat Aur Chahat K Sabhi Ehsas Hain Us Main

Isi Maah-E-Muhabbat Main Yahi Har Saal Hota Hai

Muhabbat Ki Mehak Se Har Ik Shae Mua'tar Hai

Libaada Muhabbat Ki Surkhi Ne
Har Ek Shae Ko Dhaanp Rakha Hai

Muhabbat Karne Walon Ki To Jese Eid Ka Din Hai

Yehi Din To Bahane Se Un Ki Deed Ka Din Hai

Magar Sun Ae Meri Jaan

Muhabbat To Kabhi Bhi Ek Din Ki Muhtaaj Nahen Hoti

Tohfe Tahaif Se Kabhi Phoolon Ki Jharmat Se

Yeh Chahat Barh Nahen Sakti, Aqeedat Ho Nahen Sakti

Muhabbat Behta Dariya Hai Jo Poori Shaadmani Se

Saara Saal Behta Hai, Har Pal Yeh Kehta Hai

Agar Tum Pyar Karte Ho To Kyon Intizar Karte Ho.

Muhabbat soch k Karna…

Kabi kuch soch k likhna kabi kuch soch k parhna,,

Kisi ka dil’ruba chehra or us pe dil’nsheen aankhen,,

K jisko dekh k jeena usi k naam pe marna..!

Khayalon me bna lena kisi ka aks dheerey sy,,

Kabhi tum bhi nazar aao…

Subha say sham tak ham ko.

Buhat say log miltay hain…

Nigahon say guzartay hain...

Koi andaz tum jaisa...

Koi humnaam tum jaisa.

Magar tum hi Nahi miltay.

Buhat bay chain phirtay hain,

Baray bay tab rehtay hain,

Dua ko hath uthtay hain,

Dua mein yeh hi kehtay hain,

Lagi hay bheer logon ki,

Magar is bheer mein “Saqi”

Kabhi tum bhi Nazar aao.

Kabhi tum bhi nazar aao.

Kaash Aik Din Aisa Bhi Aaye Waqat ka Pal Pal Tham Jaye

Samney Bus Tum Hi Raho Aur Umar Guzzar Jaye

Prompt: Rereading and Rewriting

In the poem "Rereading Frost" by Linda Pastan, she confronts a problem that many poets probably confront at some point. Is there anything left to write about or has everything been written?

Sometimes I think all the best poems
have been written already,
and no one has time to read them,
so why try to write more?

This is not a problem only for poets. All writers, inventors, scientists, painters, filmmakers, and other creators are faced with this problem. Is there anything new and original to create?

Of course, the answer is that there are always new things. The world changes. We change.

But the more poetry you read, the more likely you are to realize that a lot of topics have been covered already. The real problem might be that you may feel that someone else has already written a better poem than you could ever write.

Billy Collins' poem "The Trouble with Poetry" addresses this issue too.

the trouble with poetry is
that it encourages the writing of more poetry,
more guppies crowding the fish tank,
more baby rabbits
hopping out of their mothers into the dewy grass.

And how will it ever end?
unless the day finally arrives
when we have compared everything in the world
to everything else in the world,

and there is nothing left to do
but quietly close our notebooks
and sit with our hands folded on our desks.

We hope you won't close your notebook (or laptop) and sit back and stop writing. Collins didn't stop. In fact, he continues:

But mostly poetry fills me
with the urge to write poetry,
to sit in the dark and wait for a little flame
to appear at the tip of my pencil.
And along with that, the longing to steal,
to break into the poems of others

Like Pastan, we read and reread poems and poets and we are inspired to write our own. Our poem may complement the original or go against it. It might update the topic of the poem. William Shakespeare writes about love and you do a 21st-century update on his approach.

Like Collins, we might steal a bit from the other poet - a line, a title, an image, the idea for the poem itself.

In Pastan's poem, she has more of a mixed response to rereading Frost's poem.

And I decide not to stop trying,
at least not for a while, though in truth
I'd rather just sit here reading
how someone else has been acquainted
with the night already, and perfectly.

For this month's prompt, we ask you to reread and rewrite - a poem that begins in response to rereading some favorite poem. It might be one you know you can't do any better. It might be one that you can rewrite in a new way. Let the reader in on the poem or poet that inspired you.

Submission Deadline: December 31, 2019
