Walt Whitman and his Poems Diction Themes and Symbols




Introduction :
He was born in New York in 1819. He died in New Jersey in 1892. His father Walter was a Carpenter and a house builder.
Walt Whitman Portrays the life of people who were ruined during the Civil war .his themes are dealing with democracy and groups of people.

Principles of nature :
He discusses the organic principles of nature. And there is liberal use of metaphors, symbols, and imagery.

Imaginative Power:
His imaginative power was so strong that he captured the reality of nature.

The concept of Democracy: His concept of democracy is different from other writers of the time .he seems to be a democracy in both life and poetry.

Poetic diction :
His poetic diction is distinguished from other poets because his poetic diction includes slang and regional dialects.

Subjects of Whitman's Poetry :
The subject of Whitman's poetry is very similar to the themes of Wordsworth.his poetry deals with common people and everyday life.

Places of the individual:
He praises the individual. In fact, he presents the whole of America by quoting an individual. According to him, problems of an individual is problems of the whole of America.

Poetic symbols:
He uses plant life as symbols both growth and multiplicity. He uses flowers, bushes, wheat, trees, and other plant life to signify the possibilities of re-growth after death.
